The Arts Theatre was built in 1927 as a members club, which allowed it to circumvent the censorship laws and perform unusual and avant garde fare. One of the smallest West End theatres, it has retained its reputation for short runs of innovative and controversial productions. The UK premiere of Beckett's Waiting for Godot was held at this theatre, as were The Vagina Monologues, The Pet Shop Boys Musical, and Justin Butcher's satire The Madness of George Dubya.
