Arcadia received its world premiere at the National Theatre in 1993, scooping the Olivier Award for Best New Play in the process and now Tom Stoppard's extraordinary play is back in this major revival at the Duke of York's Theatre. It's a work of real artistry - "Stoppard's richest, most ravishing comedy" said the New York Times - hinging on the dramatic intertwining of past and present as characters from 1809 and 1989 breeze in and out of the same room at Sidley Park, an English country pile. A wonderful eccentricity swirls around the action - a modern-day professor arrives at the estate with the theory that Lord Byron murdered an amateur poet while staying there in 1809, giving the play the air of a country mystery. But Stoppard also imbues Arcadia with a stream of intellectual thought as the characters throw around ideas about history, science and the universe, making connections between people and knowledge across generations. A rare gem of theatrical ingenuity.
